Disposing Of Your Old Computer

by tom.henselAs I am writing this article new laws are being made that will prevent people from throwing computers, monitors and other components in the trash. Be sure what you are allowed to do in your area.

Computer repair services also may include deciding a computer is uneconomically repairable. This simply means that the cost of repair exceeds the cost of replacement. In that case the computer owner needs to take action to properly dispose of the computer. If you have a Goodwill store or other recycling outlet in your area you can take it there and they will do the rest.

What to do before you recycle it

Every area of the country is different when it comes to recycling computers and computer equipment. Check you local ordinances. Sometimes you can get fined or arrested if you dispose of this equipment illegally. You may be required to separate plastic components from steel as an example.

The main thing to do is remove any parts you may need for the new computer or that you can use as a spare part in the future. Maybe you need the CD-ROM or Memory chips. However, you MUST remove your personal data from your hard drive. Why? If you do not remove your personal data you could become a victim of identity theft. You may have your name and address and even you contact information in either your e-mail or some other program. Even worse you might be able to log into your bank account.Thieves are out there just waiting for you to make this mistake.

How can you sure your information is removed?

You need to reformat the drive. Some computers come with restore disks and others have a key you can push when you first start the computer. In any case you need to be sure any data you want to keep is backed up on another drive or storage media. Once you start restoring the hard drive all data will be removed and you will not be able to get it back. Although there are possibilities to still get some of your information off, most people will not know how to and will not have the necessary tools to do it with. If you have very sensitive records (medical, criminal or other) you will need to have somebody use a special program that will obliterate any data that may be on the hard drive.

Are there other way?

Yes! you could totally remove the hard drive. However, you need to remember that your personal data may still be on it. Either get somebody to destroy the information or make sure the drive is marked so you don’t loose it. You can still use it in another computer or as a backup drive.

What if I want to sell the old computer?

If you plan to give away or sell your old computer you definitely need to make sure all personal data is off the hard drive. This is the single biggest mistake people make when they get rid of an old computer. If you don’t know how to get rid of personal information find somebody that can do it for you.

I may have sounded repetitious about being sure yourpersonal data is not on the hard drive. This was intentional. Even after all the warnings, people still make this huge mistake.

The MITS Altair 8800 was a microcomputer design from 1975, based on the Intel 8080 CPU.

Sold as a kit through Popular Electronics magazine, the designers intended to sell only a few hundred to hobbyists, and were surprised when they sold over ten times that many in the first month. Today the Altair is widely recognized as the spark that led to the personal computer revolution of the next few years.

Located in Mountain View, CA, the Computer History Museum is the world’s largest and most significant history museum for preserving and presenting the computing revolution and its impact on the human experience.

Established in 1996, the Computer History Museum is a public benefit organization dedicated to the preservation and celebration of computing history.

When The Computer Museum (TCM, in Boston) sent the majority of its historical collection to Moffett Field, California, so that TCM could concentrate on computing-related exhibits for children, The Computer History Museum was created. Thus, it was originally the West Coast division of The Computer Museum, named The Computer Museum History Center until it shortened its name in 2001, dedicated to preserving and presenting the stories and artifacts of the information age, and exploring the computing revolution and its impact on our lives. When The Computer Museum closed in 1999, its exhibit collection was absorbed into the Museum of Science collection in Boston. In February 2000 the remaining historical artifacts were sent to The Computer Museum History Center at Moffett Field. Originally located at Moffett Field in an old building that was previously the Naval Base furniture store, the museum acquired its current building (previously occupied by Silicon Graphics), at 1401 N. Shoreline Blvd. in Mountain View, California, USA (Silicon Valley) in October 2002. It opened there to the public in June 2003.

Former media executive John Hollar was appointed CEO of The Computer History Museum in July 2008. The Museum currently has three unique exhibits highlighting important milestones from the history of computing, visible storage, the history of software/computer chess, and inventions from Silicon Valley companies and people. A Difference Engine No. 2, designed by Charles Babbage in the 1840s and constructed by the Science Museum in London is exhibited from 10 May 2008 through December 2009.

The museum’s 15,000-square-foot exhibit "Timeline of Computing History", covering 2,000 years of computing history will open in late 2009.

The Computer History Museum is home to the largest and most significant collection of computing artifacts in the world. This includes many rare or one-of-a-kind objects such as a Cray-1 supercomputer as well as a Cray-2, Cray-3 and on request, Cray-4 parts, the Utah teapot, the 1969 Neiman Marcus Kitchen Computer, Hewitt Crane’s all-magnetic computer, an Apple I, an example of the first generation of Google’s racks of custom-designed web servers, and the first coin-operated video game. The collection comprises nearly 50,000 objects, photographs and films, as well as 4,000 feet of cataloged documentation and several hundred gigabytes of software.

One can join the group of volunteers, which includes Docents and Greeters, to help run the various activities at CHM: regular and highlight tours of the "Visible Storage", lecture series, CHM Fellow Awards, restoration of selected computers, archive work, collections documentation, and special events. During open hours, volunteers also demonstrate and maintain the Babbage Difference Engine #2.
